Bio

 

Bogota, Colombia (1995) 

Gabriela Estrada Loochkartt is a Colombian artist born in the Andean mountains who currently lives in Chicago. She graduated from the Art Department at Universidad de los Andes (2020), where her project Mi casa es tu casa was awarded Meritorious Thesis. For the development of her thesis project, Gabriela received funding from the Research and Creation Center at Universidad de los Andes. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in the Fibers and Materials department, where she was awarded the Joan Livingstone scholarship.

She was part of the X International Biennial of Contemporary Textile Art WTA (2022). She participated in the collective exhibition Probar el mundo con la boca sin que te piquen las espinas at the Museo Casa Diego Rivera (2023, Guanajuato, México). Her solo exhibitions La palabra casa tiene dos techos (2021), Conversaciones con la Tierra (2022), and Vientre Tierra (2023) were held at Policroma Galería (Medellín), Galería La Cometa (Bogotá), and SGR Galería (Bogotá).

She was selected by Emiliano Valdéz to be part of the curatorship Antes de que todo sea polvo during the ARTBO fair in the Arte Cámara section (2020). She was invited to participate in the collective exhibition Qué se teje y qué se borda en tiempos de pandemia at the Museo de la Tertulia in Cali (2020). In Colombia, her work has been selected by curators for participation in spaces such as Salón Comunal, La Balsa Arte, Atrio (ARTBO), Galería Colombo Americano, and the Referentes curatorship during the ARTBO 2023 fair. Her work was part of the collective exhibition La casa de tela at the cultural space Lugar Usual in Mexico City.

In Chicago, she has exhibited in spaces such as Compound Yellow, Mayfield and the National Museum of Mexican Art. She was a co-founder of the artistic collective Severas Nenas. Recently, she was nominated for the Sara Modiano award and she collaborated with Artesanías de Colombia as part of the Arte Vivo initiative. She was invited to be part of the Mundo Común residency Cuerpo Enjambre where she is participating actively.
